Finder’s Archive – Cabal Coffers

Hi everyone, and welcome back to the Finder’s Archives.

In this column, we take some of the lands from Magic: The Gathering and turn them into something you can use for your fantasy games.

The stats given in each entry assumes that you’re using Pathfinder or 5e for your games, but they can easily be converted over into any fantasy system. This week we dive into the vaults of the Cabal, with the Cabal Coffers.

Cabal Coffers

The Cabal Coffers were created by a group known only as the Cabal. They’re villains of all types, coming from across the multiverse, all with various interests that align. They’re, in essence, a cult dedicated to the gathering of wealth, but who fell under the influence of a fiend, and turned into a death cult as a result. They believe that every death they arrange brings their patron one step closer to godhood, and they are eagerly pursuing this path.

They’ve found that the most useful tool in manipulating others to their ends is greed, pure and simple. And nothing incites as much greed as gold. They gather and spend coins freely on their goals, but through astute business dealings, they always seem to end up with more gold than they had before, as evidenced by the need for the Cabal Coffers themselves.

Lay of the Land

The Cabal Coffers is a series of gigantic underground caverns, filled to the brim with coins, religious artifacts, magical items, and more. Anything that has value to anyone in the multiverse, can be stored here, even the rare soul gems. It is said that the most valuable soul gem in the Cabal Coffers contains the soul of a great hero – supposedly the sort of payment that could not just buy one a kingdom, but buy an entire layer on one of the Lower Planes, if sold to the right fiend.

The location of the Cabal Coffers is a secret, but not a particularly well-guarded one. They can be found in the plane of Carceri, buried miles underground, within the ice of Agathys, the sixth layer of Carceri. Only the members of the Cabal know the secret ritual for entering the Coffers, through a ritual that even non-spellcasters can use (though this requires the sacrifice of a LOT of innocent people, so whenever the Cabal is trying to remain covert, they use powerful spellcasters instead).

Dangers

Entering Carceri and Agathys is dangerous enough on its own, but even so, the Coffers have their own guardians. Specifically a group of three pit fiends who call themselves the Triumvirate. (PF2 / 5e) are the ones who keep the peace. They’re all three very powerful fiends, but they share a hive mind, so what one knows, they all know, and they’re able to perfectly coordinate any attacks and strategies that they need to. Secretly, and unbeknownst to the members of the Cabal, the Triumvirate is a single entity, in three bodies, and the one that is directing the efforts of the Cabal. With enough power, the Triumvirate can ascend into true godhood.

And with that, we hope to see you next week. 😊

40 years old, and a gamer since I was 13. These days I freelance as a writer for various companies (currently Fat Goblin Games, Flaming Crab Games, Outland Entertainment, Paizo, Raging Swan Games, Rusted Iron Games, and Zenith Games), I've dipped my hands into all sorts of games, but my current "go-to" games are Pathfinder 2, Dungeon Crawl Classics and SLA Industries. Unfortunately, while wargaming used to be a big hobby, with wife, dog and daughter came less time.
