Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea was the first science fiction novel I read, when I was 9 or 10. And I followed it up by watching the Disney movie adaptation and going on the Disney World ride over and over. (Nope, I have yet to forgive Disney for removing that ride.) And the Jules Verne classic is still a favorite a half-century later. The whole thing, especially the diving scenes (and that organ!) captured my imagination. Verne is often called “The Man Who Invented the Future” as so many things he described in his Voyages Extraordinaire would become real devices and vehicles. Probably the most recent is the “Leyden Bottle” ammo used in the underwater rifles. So for your own Steampunk and other 19th Century extraordinary voyages, I present the rifles used by Captain Nemo and his crew.
