Owlbears are fierce, aggressive carnivores. They appear as a bear with the head of an owl. There are rumors of similar creatures armed with vicious front taloned feet instead of clawed paws. The species’ origins are lost in the distant past. The usual folktale theories claim it’s the result of magical experimentation, no doubt by a wizard whose lack of wisdom was matched only by a lack of sanity. It’s said that there are variants adapted to many climates and terrain. They act and move like natural bears. Owlbears even fight much like true bears and favor “hugging” attacks.

Design & Play Notes: This is the classic fantasy RPG beast, one of the first created for D&D, and now found all over the hobby from 5e and Pathfinder to video games to the Order of the Stick webcomic. And now you have one for your Genesys games. Of course, it’s usable with the official Terrenoth setting and your own fantasy worlds. But that’s not all. Give your Star Wars RPG heroes something to drop in on–or smuggle out–besides rancors and rathtars. And imagine how happy everyone at Hogwarts will be if Hagrid adopts a pet less dangerous than a dragon.
Owlbear Hugs: Use these narratively–they’re a good way to spend a hapless PC’s Despair result, or a Triumph or multiple Advantage from an owlbear combat check.
