Astral Projections – Ranida (Mutants & Masterminds 3e)

Backstory: Rhonda was one of the many then elementary school-aged children who were affected by the Silver Storm, but the effects lay dormant until puberty. Rhonda began to show definite amphibian characteristics, including skin and hands and feet that become longer and webbed at will. She also has internal gills so she can breathe in either air or water. Ironically, she was a competitive swimmer and diver until her changes. Her codename Ranida (pronounced Rah-nee-duh) is the singular of Ranidae, the biological Family of true frogs.

Design & Play Notes: As part of the prep for a new Hero High (teen hero) campaign, our GM asked us to create fellow students and other NPCs and Rhonda/Ranida was one of my concepts. She was inspired by the My Hero Academia supporting character Tsuyu Asui aka Froppy. Ranida’s powers and skills aren’t quite the same as Froppy’s, however. To my surprise, I quickly became fond of Ranida, and decided to make a full PL8 statblock, suitable for a PC in a Hero High game. (If I ever need or want a backup PC for this game, it’ll be Ranida.)

Ranida is probably best run by a player interested in a team support role, perhaps the Control (Team-focused aspect) or Flex tactical roles, from the Superteam Handbook. Ranida might grow into a stronger Flex or Control character over time. If she spends Power Points on appropriate skills and advantages, Ranida has the potential for team leadership.
