Force Wizard – Unmatched Heroism SA (Guardian Career)

“Force Wizard” is my series on the Force & Destiny Careers’ Signature Abilities.

The out of turn incidental SA Unmatched Heroism (UH) isn’t a buff. It’s closer to a “Get Out of Jail Free” card for an ally. Actually it’s a “Get Out of Damage Free” card. Once this is activated, by spending 2 Destiny Points, you can move to Engaged range of an ally who has been hit (successful combat check) and take the damage for them. For the Base UH, duration is 2 rounds, the ally must be in Short range, and you take 2 Strain.

UH doesn’t have any unique upgrades. All upgrades are found in many SAs and simply modify the Basic version, rather than granting extras. The links between the upgrades are a simple loop, with the possible starting points at upper left and third from left.

There are 3 Duration (two 10 XP and one 15XP), so up to 5 rounds you can interpose for your allies. This is a typical SA maximum duration. The single Increase Range allows you to get to an ally within Medium range. Destiny and Frequency upgrades (1 of each) drop the DP cost to 1 and allow a second use per session.

The two Endurance upgrades each lower the Strain taken by 1. The developers clearly felt the Endurance upgrades were the highest value, the way the tree is set up, and they are right. Buying both instances will allow you to protect just about all your allies, without draining your personal strain. But this is costly, XP-wise. Getting Endurance 1 will cost 25 or 50XP worth of upgrades; add 40-45XP for Endurance 2. With Endurance 2 dropping Strain taken to zero, your only cost is 1-2 DPs per activation.

For lowest XP cost, go Destiny>Duration>Endurance for 35XP. Or, you will have more flexibility in using UH if you take the path Duration>Frequency>Increase Range>Endurance (50XP), even though activation costs 2 DP. The additional 10XP for the Destiny upgrade may be worth it.

This SA is for you if you love playing characters who rush in to protect the sorely injured, helpless, or just hapless. UH lets you be truly heroic by doing just that. You can run to valiantly stand over your fallen mentor, BFF, or beloved viceroy, taking the lightsaber slash or blaster bolt that would have finished them.

You can interpose yourself between the bounty hunter, Stormtrooper squad, or hungry rancor who’s taken aim at the prince-Senator or cute Force-sensitive youngling you swore to protect. You can then fight their assailant on your turn–and on your terms. Bonus: the look on the BBEG’s face when they realize they missed their easy target because you appeared out of nowhere!

Next month we’ll begin studying the Mystic SAs. Until then, may the Force be with you always!
