This article is a follow-up to a prior article published on February 18, 2020.
On March 10, 2020, reports (first breaking on Reddit) detailed scattered news from the Asmodee Keynote address at the 2020 GAMA show revealed an announced plan to transition the production and continued publication of Fantasy Flight Games RPG products in the Genesys, Star Wars, and Legend of the Five Rings lines to the Spanish/French editor & publisher of Edge Entertainment over the course of this year.
The Reddit user who published the announcement provided little detail, but confirmed that, “Old books will still be printed, and new ones will be made. New books will still work with existing ones, so it’s not a new edition.”
This announcement seems to precede any type of formal announcement from FFG, but does follow on the heels of a recent FFG comment messaged to viewers during a live-stream event, which denied that the company would be shuttering their RPGs. *However, a recent site update from Edge appears to launch a new “Edge Studio” website that formally announces this handover.*
From an Asmodee (the parent company of Fantasy Flight Games) perspective, this move would still be keeping the FFG RPG lines “in house,” as Asmodee absorbed Edge Entertainment in early 2017. To date, Edge Entertainment has handled a large portion of European distribution for various Asmodee products, including the foreign language printings of the FFG RPG lines.
While many fans across the internet have expressed excitement and joy that their beloved RPG games will continue; others have responded with anger and frustration over the move, which was precipitated by the layoff of the (U.S. based) FFG RPG Department in January of 2020.
At this time of this article, no official communication has been made by FFG, Asmodee, or Edge via any official channels outside the reported keynote address at GAMA. d20Radio will continue to follow this story and keep our listeners and readers informed as new developments unfold.
