Finder’s Archives: 3 Fridays till Christmas – Episode 2

Hi everyone, and welcome back to the Finder’s Archives. This week it’s Episode 2 of the 3 Fridays to Christmas countdown! Today’s episode is dedicated to 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons.

So now it’s time to put on your warm boots and your pointy red hat, as we head to Santa’s Workshop.

Santa’s Workshop

Santa’s workshop is a magical place, filled with joy, laughter, and the stuff of happiness. At the center of it all stands Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, surrounded by their elf helpers. No one is quite sure where the workshop is placed, as it is protected by powerful magic from scrying or non-magical observation. Not only that, but the location seems to move as some believe it is at the center of the North Pole, while others have credibly reported it as being situated in other, cold, lands.

Lay of the Land

The Santa’s Workshop area comprises 4 major areas or buildings. The first is the Claus residence. Year-round, Mrs. Claus keeps the oven going, baking sweets, cookies and somewhat healthier options – especially as Mr. Claus is on the 364 days a year diet, due to simple sugar-overload on Christmas Eve itself. Second is the stables, where the reindeer live. Each day they’re attended to by Mr. Claus who grooms them and checks on the sleigh harness, making sure it’s well-oiled and maintained, and that the reindeer are all ready for the big day. The third building is the workshop itself, where hundreds of elves work each day to ensure that toys are ready for children when Christmas comes, though, there is a small coal mine (that some claim has been growing exponentially each year in recent decades) for the gifts of coal for the children that need to better their ways. And finally, the last area is where the elves live, in their little families. Unlike the other 3 areas, there are multiple buildings in the elven living areas, as they form families and live out their lives. Most of the elves are happy with their lot in life, all treated well and paid well by Santa (after all, Santa IS the spirit of generosity), but some few seek more in life, and travel the world.

Dangers

For a place dedicated to happiness and generosity, Santa’s Workshop can be a remarkably dangerous place, especially for the unwary. The workshop is ALWAYS busy and building something, and the unwary might get caught in the gears of giant pistons, or mistaken for a new toy that has gotten loose, and which the elves have to bring back to the workshop.

There are also wild animals around the workshop area, though these are all outside whichever enchantments that have been put unto the workshop. The same goes for explorers and the curious looking to get in. All are kept out by the magic.

The residents themselves could also easily be underestimated, but that would be a mistake, as the Claus’ and the elves are magical beings, more than capable of defending themselves. (Treat the elves as pixies, while the Claus family are both Lawful Good versions of the Prince of Twilight )

Unfortunately, while wargaming used to be a big hobby, with wife, dog and daughter came less time.
