Backstory: As a Jedi student, Dantris Solomani, usually called Dani, got both academic honors and reprimands for pranks in generous measure. A merry youth, he was a strong empath with a knack for aura-reading. But the rare Jedi art of using the Force to heal was his strongest gift, and he attended medical school before undergoing the Trials. As a Jedi Knight in the years before and during the Clone Wars, he dedicated himself completely to healing, often saying, “If I couldn’t touch the Force, I would still have ended up a doctor.”
During the Clone Wars, he acted as a medical officer, refusing to be a Jedi General, treating battle casualties and war refugees alike. This stance may have dismayed the Jedi Council, but it did save his life. When Order 66 was given, he was aboard a MedStar medical ship, with most of the clones around him too injured to be a threat. Although traumatized by the psychic impact of so many deaths, he managed to escape the MedStar in the confusion.
He lost himself among the displaced war refugees, obtained forged medical credentials to replace the damning Jedi ones, and traveled to a backwater world. There Dani found beings desperate enough for medical care that they didn’t ask questions. He mourned the many murdered Jedi, while continuing, as always, to aid the ill and injured. He’d always combined Force-healing with ordinary medicine and surgery. Now he practiced like any other doctor, applying healing very discreetly to save lives, distracting others or even using mind tricks to keep his secrets.
Over the years, he has moved several times, always to out of the way planets like that first one, using various identities, of which Dr. Danny Solys is the latest. “Dr. Solys” makes sure to avoid attracting Imperial attention. He is content to live quietly, taking care of others, many of them with no one else to care, just as he did as a Jedi. This planet is no different from the others. But something is different here, the Force may have some new purpose for him, he senses…
Description: At the time of the Galactic Civil War, Dr. Solys is in his early fifties, and looks a few years younger, aside from his gray hair and goatee. He has a light olive complexion, jade green eyes and a slight build. He is a compassionate & charming man with a sense of humor, although not nearly as merry as in his youth. He genuinely likes people, especially younglings, and most beings like and trust him, even without his Influence/Affect Mind abilities. (Play him with a Bones McCoy vibe, just less sarcastic.)
Design notes: This is a newly re-written version of an NPC from an OCR/RCR Prequel Era campaign I ran after I first discovered that Star Wars RPGs existed. Master Dani, as he was usually called before Order 66, was a memorable NPC and is probably my fondest memory from the campaign. In fact, years later a good friend would borrow him and another NPC of mine for an SWSE Alternate-Universe campaign.
I choose to build each of the three sets of stats independently, rather than building one set and converting to the other two, for a couple reasons. First, I just didn’t care for the RCR to SWSE conversion systems I had found and F&D is far too different from d20 systems to do an effective conversion. More importantly, it allowed me to build the stats in a holistic fashion, getting as close as each system allows to what Dani really is, a dedicated Healer/physician who managed to evade the Empire for quite a long time. For F&D, Dani is built as sort of an “Anti-Inquisitor,” using the F&D Inquisitor template as a rough guideline for his abilities. For RCR and SWSE, as is typical of D20 games, NPCs use the same creation rules as PCs, which is what I did. It was quite a walk down memory lane, cracking open books that I haven’t used in several years. Speaking of books, each build uses only the core book for its system, plus the Jedi-specific sourcebooks for RCR & SWSE (Power of the Jedi and Jedi Academy Training Manual, respectively).
GM Notes: Danny, or Dantris, is intended as a mentor for an F&D party that takes the Mentor benefit, or for individual Force-sensitive PCs in mixed parties playing in any Star Wars RPG or era. In campaigns set in an era with an active Jedi Order (including Alternate-Universe), he is suitable as a Master for one or more Jedi padawan PCs, as appropriate.
If played in Dark Times/Rebellion eras (the default for FFG Star Wars), locate him on one of your less-known, remote worlds, with a small population. He will most likely operate a charity clinic or similar practice out of his home, and make house calls. If players are involved with the Rebellion, Danny may be one of those doctors who secretly treat Rebel agents. Unless the mentor relationship is in place at the start of your campaign, the doctor will take time to interact with and investigate PCs – and do a lot of thinking and meditating – before revealing what he really is or offering training. He has good reason to be cautious after all.
Danny, a “Lightside paragon” in FFGSW terms, will not tolerate students or apprentices who commit lots of Dark Side (Conflict-worthy) acts with little remorse. Humble enough to realize even he can give in to Dark Side temptations (usually via anger at cruelty to innocents, especially children), he is compassionate and willing to help someone who truly regrets such acts to atone and turn away from Dark paths. But those who willfully continue to follow, and even revel in, the Dark Side are another matter.
It is an easy, and possibly dangerous, mistake to assume the good doctor is a pushover. Good does not equal Stupid and Kind does not equal Weak. His considerable social skills, augmented if needful, with Influence/Mind Trick/Affect Mind, mean Danny can usually get other beings to do, believe or even forget what he wants them to. He is also competent with his lightsaber and a blaster, if he cannot avoid combat, such protecting someone. Since he is popular with the locals, they are likely to at least warn him of possible threats and may even delay pursuers.
