Isabella Morales lived a fairly unremarkable childhood. The eldest daughter of a large family hovering just below the poverty line, she was no stranger to struggling to make do with what was at hand. But everything changed for her family when she won a strange amulet from a three card monte dealer on the street. Suddenly her father was offered a well-paying job in an industry that he loved and was well qualified for after years of being passed over for promotion in his current job. His new salary meant that her mother could quit her part time jobs and stay at home to raise the rest of the kids. While they aren’t rich by any means, they are now at least comfortable. Even immediate money concerns disappeared – it’s hard to struggle for food when you can find a $20 on the ground to cover lunch. But it wasn’t long after she won her “Milagros charm” as she took to calling it that several men who said they were from a place called A.E.G.I.S. Labs showed up asking her about the amulet. They explained that it had properties that they wished to study. These properties could be used to help a lot of people given the right application. They ultimately tried to take it from her, but found they couldn’t – the amulet had bonded with her somehow. And so they offered her a position within the lab, where she could use her powers to help the world. Worried about what might happen to her family if she didn’t accept, she agreed.
Powers
Chance can alter luck through the amulet she won – both for herself and for others. Neither she, nor A.E.G.I.S. Labs really understands how it happens, but they have figured out that the amulet is drawing power from some other dimension. It’s entirely possible that every time she uses the charm she weakens the veil between it and our reality or inviting something else into our world. And so she tries to use it judiciously and only when it’s mission critical – but where’s the harm in treating the team to lunch every now and then with an extra $100 she finds in her jacket pocket? Surely they’ve earned it.
Personality
Chance is the eldest child and she shows it in every aspect of her life. She likes to be right about things and struggles more than a little bit when things aren’t immediately easy for her. But underneath everything, she has a fierce drive to protect her family. And her team is now a part of her family, so she will do what needs to be done to help keep them safe.
Design Notes
This character was legitimately born from a single line that popped into my head – “Leave it to Chance!” I thought the concept of a luck based hero who called themselves that and made it their catchphrase was a lot of fun. But Isabella quickly grew into a more complex character as I worked on her background and figured out how she might fight in with the rest of her team as an Agent of A.E.G.I.S.
